Frequently Asked Questions

What is a murder mystery party game?

A murder mystery party is a social game where each player takes on a character role. Over the course of the evening, secrets are revealed, accusations are made, and everyone tries to figure out who committed the crime.

How does the game work?

One person acts as the host and guides the game using a checklist. Each player receives a character with information, secrets, and objectives. The story unfolds in stages, leading to a final discussion and reveal of the murderer.

How many players do I need?

Every game is different, so you need to look at the game description. Each character is important to the story, so you can’t play with fewer people. However, sometimes people like to pair up to play a character so that extra people can play.

Does the host know who the murderer is?

No. Unless they choose to read everything and to host everyone else and not play the game. But mostly people like to host and play at the same time.

How long does the game take?

The games typically take around 2 hours, including discussion and the final reveal. You can make it longer or shorter depending on how chatty your group is, and you can check the individual games to confirm timings.

Do I need acting or improv experience?

Not at all. Some people enjoy getting into character, others prefer to just read their information and join the discussion. Both approaches work perfectly.

Is this suitable for first‑time murder mystery players?

Yes! Our games are designed to be welcoming and easy to follow, even if you’ve never played a murder mystery before. We do mark on each game whether we think it is suitable for absolute beginners, or for if it is moderately difficult, which means that the checklist is longer and requires more attention by the host. But the reward for that is a more complex plot.

What does the host do?

The host prepares the materials, assigns characters, and follows a clear checklist on the day to guide everyone through the game. Sometimes people like to have a co-host. This is entirely possible and welcome. Your co-host can play the game if they like, or they can simply help with running the party.

It can be really useful to have a co-host who would be happy to step into a part if someone cancels at the last minute.

What do I receive when I buy the game?

You’ll receive a digital download containing all the game materials, including instructions, character sheets, and hosting guides.

Do I need to print everything?

Some printing is required, but the checklist clearly explains what you need. Many hosts choose to print only the essentials.

Is this a one‑time game, or can it be replayed?

Once you know the solution, the mystery can’t truly be replayed with the same group. However, it can be played again with a new group of players with you hosting.

What age group is this suitable for?

Our games are best suited to older teens and adults. They include references to recreational drug use and/or alcohol, so parental discretion is advised for younger players.

Is the game serious or silly?

A bit of both! The plot is is solid and well‑structured, but the tone includes light, slightly silly humour. Think playful rather than slapstick. Unlikely things may happen!

What if I have questions while hosting?

You’re very welcome to get in touch. We’re happy to help if anything is unclear or if you need reassurance on the day.

What to do if you have cancellations

Cancellations, sometimes last-minute, can and do happen. However, in our experience, something can almost always be figured out. It can be a good idea to have a co-host who is not playing the game, but can step into a character if needed. You can also make a mental list of people to call on last-minute, or ask your guests if any of them want to bring a friend along.

If you end up having too many people, you can always create new characters, or have people team up with existing ones! Each mystery has a section where we address this and suggest which characters would be easy to double up.

You can also create new characters, like a protestor or a gossip (instruct them to spread as much false information as possible).

What if I'm not happy with my purchase?

These mysteries are downloadable pdfs, and are not therefore returnable. However, please reach out and we will do our best on a case by case basis to make things right for you. Our intention is for you to have a fun night and be happy with the game.
